Technology Transfer for Fishery Development

Project Overview

Shellfish processors and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wanted to explore the feasibility of developing a commercial fishery for squid, an underutilized U.S. fishery resource.  Japanese export markets were the target sector.

Aquabio's Role

  • Assessed available technology in Japan
  • Assessed international demand
  • Led technology transfer for fishery development effort to evaluate and acquire Japanese harvesting and processing equipment
  • Identified Japanese and other East Asian markets for squid
  • Identified interim processing approach needed to avoid prohibitive tariffs

Results

  • Aquabio verified that our client could reduce import tariffs and shipping costs by semi-processing squid domestically
  • Technology transfer enabled the development of export markets in Japan
